Established in 2003, by Darren and Johanna Zieffle, near Sounding Lake at Consort Alberta; Sounding Lake Arena provides an exciting rodeo environment for the community and surrounding area.
Each year, to kick off our season, we host a combined Open Steer Wrestling and Tie Down Roping Jackpot on the last weekend of October. Last year we took over the Todd Boggust Memorial Steer Wrestling Jackpot which was a resounding success (see 2007 results).
We also moved the jackpot to a week earlier. Many of the Canadian Finals current qualifiers attend to hone up their skills, before heading to Edmonton to battle it out for the coveted Canadian Championship.
Other activities at our facility include a Winter Series (Team Roping, Steer Wrestling, Tie-Down Roping, Junior Team Roping, Junior Series and a Barrel Racing Series).
Rodeo Schools are held at varying times of the year... we generally run three spring schools: two Steer Wrestling Schools and one Tie-Down Roping School.
Practice Nights
Sounding Lake holds regular practice nights for team roping, tie down roping and steer wrestling. Team roping practice twice per week Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm steer wrestling Mondays for 5:30-7:00 pm and tie down roping Wednesday for 5:30 -7:00pm. Concession is open all practice night. (2008 Winter Series dates will be posted soon.)
Beginner Night
New last year was a beginner roping night designed for the beginner roper. This allowed new ropers the opportunity to learn how to rope safely with some instruction on the dummy as well as cattle that suit there ability, this will help them to gain skill and confidence roping. Check back for this season's details.
